Weather Detective - Rain or No Rain - East Sky

Transcript:

Take a look at this photo. This photo was taken facing east earlier in the morning from our home. From this photo, one thing becomes clear: that in the afternoon today, it is going to rain. How do we know? Because if you look at the photo, it has very little blue. It has mostly pink and orange in the sky.

So, what is happening is as the rays of the sun are passing through the atmosphere early in the morning, there is something in the atmosphere that is scattering away all the blue light. So, what is reaching us in the photo is mainly pink and orange. And the one molecule that scatters blue light is water. So, which means that in the east, there are clouds that have water vapor in them, and those clouds are going to reach us later in the day.

So, later in the day, these water-bearing clouds will arrive, and it most likely will rain. So, you can be a weather detective. Simply by looking at the sky facing east early in the morning, you know how the day is going to pan out.

Bye!
