Toyota 1:6:90

Transcript:

The 1-6-90 rule from Toyota is an example of crystal clear thinking. So here's what they're saying: If you take one electric vehicle (EV) and you estimate how much lithium and other exotic metals go into making that battery, using those same amount of metals, Toyota can make six plug-in hybrids or 90 regular hybrids, which are not plug-in. That's one. So that's where the rule 1-6-90 comes from.

Now, they ran some calculations on carbon footprint reduction of those 90 plug-ins versus the one EV, and they found that over the lifetime, those 90 plug-ins reduce carbon footprint 37 times more than that single EV. This is very interesting because carbon footprint reduction has to be looked at over the lifetime of the product.

And I think Toyota has got it right in terms of hybrids are the way to go compared to EV or even plug-in hybrid. Maybe hydrogen cars, but we don't know that yet.
