Selecting a Coconut
Transcript:
Hi! Welcome to another edition of "A Little Something About Everything." Today is Ganesh Chaturthi. So, on Ganesh Chaturthi, we are making Modak. Well, I say "we" magnanimously—it's really my wife that's making Modak. But my job is to go and buy a coconut and cut it so that it's ready for making Modak.
So, here's how to select a coconut. Here's the trick to selecting a coconut. So, you take a coconut and you gently tap on it—just listen to the sound. It's a slightly metallic and resounding sound, and also you can hear the water. When you hear these two sounds, the coconut is most likely very good.
To break a coconut, make a line of water all along the diameter of the coconut. Just a light line. See, this one is the widest between the two ridges, and the other two are small. So, take this surface and now bang on this wide ridge surface with a pestle—something, some hard object. I use a pestle.
That's it for this episode. Happy coconut-ing!
