Science Graphic, Part 1
Transcript:
So, here's a cool graphic that somebody sent me. This is a cartoon that a child would draw, and it usually has a sun and some river and some animals and trees, etc. But what this person has done is put equations of physics governing each section. So take the top left, that is the sun. And what is shown are the fusion reactions that are happening in the core of stars. This is what generates all the energy in the star and it radiates it out. And that radiation of electromagnetism is governed by Maxwell's equations. That's what’s shown. The planet revolves around the star, governed by Newton's law of gravity, which just below that is shown Einstein's generalization into general relativity. Below that, the river that is shown is governed, fluid flow is governed by Navier-Stokes equation. Next to that river is a rabbit, and what is shown is the metabolism process. Glucose plus oxygen gives CO2 plus water, and it makes the ATP molecule, which sustains life. Next to the rabbit are matrices. And these matrices are essentially Lagrangian formulations of Newton's equation of motion.
