Narak Chaturdashi

Transcript:

So, today is Narak Chaturdashi. So when we are growing up, the story that we were told is on Narak Chaturdashi day, if you don't wake up before sunrise and take a bath with these pastes that you put on your skin called “utna,” and then you put oil, and then you take a bath like that. If you don't do that before sunrise, you'll be banished to Narak (hell). This is the story we were told. But the reasoning is very subtle.

So the reason this thing is done, the utna and the oil is put, oil is called “abhyangasanaan” and utna is a gritty substance made of, I don't know exactly how it's made. But you put that on your skin, mixing that gritty substance with milk and then when you do that, it cleanses the body. It's a natural exfoliant, and it prepares the body by cleaning it so that the festival of Diwali can be celebrated with a pure and clean body.

And the significance of Narak Chaturdashi is, this is the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasur. So this is the significance of Narak Chaturdashi, and the story was told just to make sure that you follow the ritual. Happy Narak Chaturdashi!
